Fat Loss After 40: What Actually Changes in Perimenopause
“I haven’t changed a thing and the weight is creeping on. It must be my hormones.”
I hear this constantly from women over 40, and I understand why. It genuinely feels like your body has turned on you overnight. But the story is a bit more useful than "blame the hormones and give up", so let's get into what's actually going on.
Is perimenopause really making you gain weight?
Not in the way most women think.
Your hormones aren't magically creating fat out of nothing. What they're doing is changing the conditions around you. They mess with your sleep, so you're more tired. Tired means you move less through the day without noticing, and you make poorer food decisions when you're running on empty. Hormones also influence where your body stores fat, so you notice it more, often around the middle, even when the overall change is small.
So the weight is still driven by the same energy balance it always was. The hormones just stacked the deck against you and made it easier to slip into a surplus without realising.
What genuinely changes, and matters
A few things shift in your 40s that are worth taking seriously.
Recovery slows down. You can't hammer yourself the way you did at 30 and bounce back the next day.
Sleep gets more fragile, and sleep is when you recover and regulate your appetite.
Muscle becomes harder to hold onto and more important than ever, because it protects your metabolism, your strength and your bones.
None of that means fat loss is off the table. It means the old approach of eat less and thrash yourself with cardio is exactly the wrong tool for this stage of life.
How I coach a woman over 40 differently
The biggest change is that I stop women slashing their food and start protecting a few key things instead.
Protein goes up, because it protects muscle and keeps you full. Strength training becomes the priority, because building and holding muscle is what keeps your body strong and shaped through this decade. Sleep and recovery get treated as part of the plan, not an afterthought. And we don't diet on the floor. We keep your food as high as it can be while still getting a result, so you're not living exhausted and starving.
I practise what I preach here. I train four days a week now, down from five, because recovery matters more than volume at this stage. And I'm stronger and fitter close to 50 than I've ever been. It's not despite the change, it's because I trained smart for it.
The one thing I wish every woman over 40 knew
Before you cut your calories again, understand this. You've probably already been eating too little for too long, and cutting further is what's keeping you stuck.
The women who crack fat loss in their 40s usually eat more than they expect, lift weights, sleep better and stop punishing themselves. It's less dramatic than another crash diet, and it's the thing that actually works.
Want a plan built for your body, at your stage?
If you're navigating perimenopause and everything that used to work has stopped, I build plans specifically for women in exactly this spot. All online, wherever you are.
A quick note: this is general information, not personal medical advice. Perimenopause affects everyone differently, so it's always worth speaking with your GP about your own situation too.
